Online Programme on Safety in Material Handling - 20-21 March 2025
Context Setting
In the present competitive environment productivity,
quality and timely delivery are key to providing customer a value of the
product and services at reasonable cost. This objective should be achieved
without causing injuries and damage to property.
Material Handling is an essential activity of every organization irrespective of the product being manufactured, transported or handled. Material handling requires lifting, shifting and stacking material of different shapes, sizes, weight and chemical properties. This may be done either manually or using machines. It is observed that accidents happen despite having the best equipment and a trained workforce. Any injury during material handling can derail the delivery schedule and have demoralizing effects on the work force.
Organizations ensure safe material handling at the workplace by providing training in operating procedures, appropriate equipment, PPE and through technological improvements like interlock etc. It's necessary for the management to ensure that workers and superiors have adequate knowledge, skill and equipment for the material being loaded, unloaded or moved either manually or mechanically. Employees must understand the potential hazards and their control before starting the task.
