Toyota Production System (TPS): Key Concepts & Guidelines to Build a Lean Value Stream: From Understanding Flow to Creating Value
The two-day virtual programme on the Toyota Production
System (TPS) provided participants with a comprehensive executive-level
understanding of TPS and its practical application in designing and sustaining
Lean value streams. The sessions offered clarity on how TPS has evolved into an
integrated management system—combining philosophy, principles, and disciplined
practices—to consistently deliver world-class operational performance.
The programme explored how customer demand translates into
takt time, how flow and pull systems are structured, and how visual management
and standard work create stability, predictability, and real-time problem
visibility. Participants gained insights into how TPS builds operational
discipline at the value stream level through standardized processes, fact-based
decision-making, and continuous improvement.
Day 1 focused on core TPS elements, including the 3Ms
(Muda, Mura, Muri), value-added versus non-value-added work, and practical
exercises to reinforce Lean fundamentals. Day 2 introduced the seven
guidelines for creating a Lean value stream, with applied learning on takt time
calculation, single-piece flow, and structured flow design principles.
The programme enabled participants to move beyond isolated
Lean tools and gain actionable clarity on designing processes that prioritize
flow, visibility, and stability. It benefited leaders across manufacturing,
engineering, R&D, operations, quality, and process engineering functions,
equipping them with robust frameworks to guide effective Lean transformation.
